Lately, I have been having a lot of things on my mind. I want to do the things I wanted to do ever since the year 2017 started, such as resume my writing gigs on Upwork and market my PC-building talent online.
I, however, am having that change of heart every time I’m in a middle of something. I am not sure if it’s because of a tight schedule of being a topnotch nurse and an awesome dad, or something else. Anyway, I won’t be dwelling on one topic anymore.
In short, I will put anything that pops up on my mind on this blog.
I have a lot of things I want to talk about, but maybe I will start with my finances. I’m surely going to bore you to death if I’m going to describe how illiterate I am when it comes to handling money.
You see, I have been in the UAE for almost five (5) years, but I don’t have enough savings to have the financial freedom every rich guy is talking about. I am not saying that life i s all about money.
There are great things that is more important than money, like your family, your service to the people, and, of course, God. I don’t need to enumerate all the best things greater than money. I’m sure you know most of them.
Nonetheless, money play an important role in our lives. All of these great things are constantly affected by money, and there is no way we can deny that. Whatever you want to be, you need money.
If you want to be a good father (or mother) and send your kids to school, you need money for that.
If you want to be a good brother (or sister) and help your siblings in their time of need, you need money for that.
If you want to serve God and help the least of our brethren, you need money for that.
And my problem starts with money. It is not that I don’t have money. In fact, I’m earning six (6) digits monthly.
I thought my salary was not enough. So, I started working as a writer online. It’s tough. I had the impression I was doing it right. But I was wrong.
Things got a bit messy somewhere along the line. My client asked me to work outside the safety of the Upwork platform — a red flag. I was hesitant at first but agreed afterwards.
After all, she was offering 11 USD per 500 words. The payment was supposed to be fortnightly (every 2 weeks), but I asked for a weekly payment. It was too good to be true, but it’s happening anyway.
In spite of the red flags, I started writing for her.
The topics were fine at the start. Writing from blogs about SEO to How-To articles, I was on a roll.
In the first night, I have written a 3000-word guide on buying an electric shaver. Oh, man! I counted my eggs after. It was a 66-dollar writing gig I just had.
That awesome gig has continued for the entire week, and I have never felt so accomplished. I have accumulated 550 Dollars in just one week.
Yes, my client owed me 550 dollars after a week.
Payday came. She’s offline. She’s always been available on Skype.
Three days has passed, and she was nowhere to be found.
Fourth day arrived, she went online.
“How are you?” I typed and sent.
“Good,” she typed back.
“I have already sent you the invoice.” I typed and sent again.
“Okay,” she said.
Five hours passed. My Paypal wallet was still empty.
I followed her up thru Skype, but she’s not responding.
I have waited for another three days, and sent another message.
I did every thing to reach her, but it was to no avail.
Bottom line, I haven’t been paid.
So, I have decided not to work outside the Upwork platform ever again.
I started working with other clients, but the drive wasn’t there anymore.
And yes, I am still back to my financial problems.
Good news, I have enrolled in the Truly Rich Club, which is headed by Bro. Bo Sanchez. And I must say I am experiencing the changes in my finances, especially in my family’s savings.
I will keep you posted. I have to go and fetch my wife from work.
